Happy Birthday Malaysia

this shot was taken by the hubby..

On Sunday, we celebrate our nation's 51st Independence Day. Yes, we are in fact that young.

The hype and the impending celebration this year feels a little subdued - we all know why. For our family, regardless of the current state of affairs, our hearts remain here, our birthplace. We are proud to be Malaysians nevertheless. Our only hope is that our nation remains strong to face any adversities that may come our way.

Since this is a long weekend holiday, like I mentioned, we'd probably take advantage of it by doing something fun together. God willing and if the weather permits; because we've had crappy weather all week. From the looks of it, I am really not thoroughly optimistic to say the least.

However, should all things go as planned, I'll have some nice photos for you next week. So, in the meantime, you take care now..Enjoy yourselves, be nice and most of all, be kind!

Watching

You can't see it from here but there was in fact a little yellow butterfly fluttering around outside our living-room window. It landed just on the window grill at where Ash was standing and the only thing that stood between the both of them was the glass door. I have not been opening the glass door for a while now due to the pesky mozzies.

The butterfly caught Ash's attention and all she did for a good 5 minutes was stand there, watching the light-winged creature. She saw it wriggle a little, seemingly unsettled as if the spot wasn't as comfortable as it thought. As soon as Ash tried to make a gesture, like poking the glass, the butterfly flew away into the leaves and soon, away from our premises.

From that moment, an idea hit me like a bolt of lightning - I probably will utilize this long weekend holiday to introduce Ash to more butterflies. Would be great, wouldn't it? :-)

Dream a little dream

Hey, I feel generous today : I’ll let you in on a little secret! Yes, I am well aware that once this cat is out of the bag, there is no turning back but I'm sure I’ll live.

You know what a verging-on-crazed tennis fan I am right? By the way, “No. 2” – does not bode well next to Fed’s name. Anyway, as I was saying, tennis...you see, the secret I am about to reveal here is my equally, if you’d like to call it that, “crazy” dream. The dream of turning Ash into a pro tennis super-star!

You laugh...wait till you see me on tv, sitting at the VVIPs, next to some hot hot celeb of the future and only then, we shall see who has the last laugh…LOL…Alright, jokes aside. I’ve been reading about these young athletes and learned that they began playing the game from a very young age. Some even started at 2 or 3! As enthusiastic about the prospect as I am but where am I going to find rackets small and light enough for my little Ash’s hands? Either that or these kids have gigantum hands!

So, one weekend, while shopping for groceries at Tesco, I went around to the kids’ section, hoping to find toy rackets for kids. I managed to find one that would fit Ash’s tiny hands. They came in a pack of 2 rackets, 2 round plastic balls that are no bigger than squash balls and a shuttlecock (I figured, if she can’t make it as a bona fide tennis player, she could switch to badminton instead).

That purchase was made roughly 2 months back and am pretty disappointed to report that she hasn’t shown much interest in the game. She has yet to master hitting the balls with the racket. As a matter of fact, she has mastered the art of hitting the racket at every other thing instead.

I was beginning to think that this ‘dream’ of mine is a lot harder for me to make it real than I originally thought! And, I’m seriously thinking of shoving it. I mean, who am I kidding? Evidently, I’ve been watching way too much tv!

Well, that was my position until she showed me, as explicitly as she possibly could, what she really thought of the shuttlecock or a possible career in badminton :

With that, and while I really don’t want to say too much in case I jinx the whole thing, I am definitely keeping my fingers crossed..*smile*

Happy faces

The clown and the little kid - I simply couldn't resist.

As it turned out, they were being photographed by some professional photographers about 10 feet away! LOL...Luckily for me, I still have my camera and the lady smiled as she walked passed. Nice lady she was!

May you have a splendid day with happy faces all around! *smile*

Shades of Blue

Lets see – the weekend went well. Was able to get some shopping done and basically, relaxed the whole time with family. A great way to unwind especially from the disastrous weekend starter that we had. I probably saved some money on more blemish acne cream from not having been stressed out.

We were invited to a wedding dinner party by hubby's colleague yesterday evening. It was held at a bungalow turned restaurant, The Garden Courtyard Restaurant in Damansara Heights. The décor theme of the evening was silver and shades of blue which incidentally gave a very romantic, intimate and classy yet casual feel to the party. Not overly done and extremely beautiful. Sorry, I can't provide you with evidentiary photos since it was a private party and I didn't want to intrude. So, you'll just have to take my word for it.

As always, my personal favorite : the food - which was excellent. We were treated to a sit-down buffet dinner comprising a mixture of asian and western dishes as opposed to the traditional 10-course Chinese wedding dinners we are so used to. Frankly, I much prefer the buffet - faster!

I can't tell you how impressed I was throughout but I think my hubby's foreign boss may have been a little disappointed : he was looking forward to experience his very first authentic Chinese wedding. LOL...Boy, he sure was in for a shocker. He whispered “I honestly never expected this : here listening to songs by Frank Sinatra!”.

But there were snippets of Chinese wedding parties – like when they had the karaoke serenading sessions (with Mandarin numbers) and the 'Yam Seng” which I feel is usually mandatory at ANY Chinese weddings. So, I'm pretty sure that watered down his disappointment.

We took Ash along since it appears that her routine has “disappeared”. I chose the Japanese shorts and 'blouse' since..well, it goes pretty well with her new hair-cut..LOL...She had a great time and was determined to show us how much by running all over with no care at all - oblivious to the fact that she was more the entertainer than the entertainee.

Regrettably, we couldn't stay on till the end. Especially, not with a young toddler. People were already querying why we even brought her and shouldn't she be in bed. I shrugged and told them that she USED to be in bed but for some reason, she just doesn't want to anymore. I feel guilty. We will work this out. Somehow. Wish me luck! :-)

Rain on my parade

I want to write something fun – like what a fun day we yesterday. Unfortunately, I can't and our day was anything but fun.

I think our bad day had something to do with us wanting to get everything done. We wanted to get our errands done, our passports done, our cleaning done and when we are done with that, I wanted to attend the parenthood exhibition at a nearby mall. So, you see, trying to squeeze in a ridiculous number of activities just won't cut it.

In the end, we only managed to accomplish half of what we set out to do. By the time we arrived at the immigration office, we were told that their entire, ENTIRE computer system was down. That effectively meant - even the queue-number dispensing machine didn't work. We waited for a while before we decided to scrap the idea and headed back home.

Actually, that wasn't the worst of what happened to us. We were involved in an accident just before reaching MIL's place to pick Ash up. Thank GOD it was a minor one and no one was badly hurt. You could say that it was somewhat of a head-on collision between our car and a motor-cycle. Hubby was the driver and the car was mine.

We were already in the residential vicinity of my MIL's place when the accident occurred. Knowing hubby, he is a careful driver. And the fact that we were in a residential area, there was no reason for us to speed. We were doing about 30 to 40 km. We saw the motor-cycle coming at us and honestly, I thought he had seen us too. I mean, how could he not? It was broad daylight!

It seems that, according to my hubby, he wasn't paying attention (do you think he was day-dreaming of franchise opportunities?) and was also driving in the middle of the road. As he approached nearer to us, hubby honked but was a little too late. He had already driven too fast which led him to lose control of his bike and hit the driver's side of my car. He fell and his bike fell on his leg. Unfortunately for us, because of the narrow road we were traveling on plus a car which was parked on the curb at our side of the road, avoiding him was just impossible.

The biker is alright, with merely aches and pains. No bruise or bleeding - at least, not that any were visible to us. By then, people from the nearby houses were already out, talking to us and handing the biker a glass of water. No chaotic scenes nor stalled traffic. We left 30 minutes later and obviously, very late for our next appointment.

I'm sorry if this isn't what you had in mind for a weekend read. But, I feel that a blog wouldn't be a blog (in this case, my blog) if I am inhibited from saying what I want to say. I promise however that future fun and happier posts will (hopefully) grace your terminal soon. In fact, today is much better. To quote the lady from one of the houses - “Both of you will have good things come your way after this”. Cynical? Oh well, lets hope she's right.

Cheeky babe

As you can see, this shot is ridiculously out of focus but probably rates as one of my favorites. :-D

Ash decided to go one up against her dad. Hubby was trying to get her to put the blocks inside the ‘snail’ can through the individually shaped holes. But she refused and if she could string a whole sentence, I bet she was saying “why so difficult? Why don’t I just lift the flap and just dump the whole thing inside instead of figuring out which shape goes into where?”.

She opened the flap and with each drop of the blocks, she sniggered and laughed, cheekily. That’s when I took the shot.

The Olympics and world's fastest man

I am just done watching our man being white-washed by the Chinese. Quite a disappointing outing considering Chong Wei plays much better than that. I know, it's relatively easy for us spectators to carve out theoretical strategies for those actually playing. Put me down on center court and I am quite sure I will wet my pants. So, I shall not dish out anymore criticism but just say “Sorry about the loss and we know you tried your best. Congratulations on the silver and I mean it”.

Last evening was pretty eventful for me. At least from the tube's perspective. Managed to perform finger olympics myself – switching between 3 channels simultaneously without missing a beat! That, in itself, is pretty much deserving of an Olympic medal to say the least. If Equestrian can be considered a sporting event and a medal contender, I am darn sure my channel surfing can.

Wouldn't you agree with me that guys (and gals), on a horse, bopping up and down isn't exactly sports? Besides, the horse is doing all the work and all these people ever do is just sit there pretty. And who do you think gets the medal in the end? Not the horse definitely! I mean, if I was the horse, I would be super mad seeing the rider stand on the rostrum, receiving a medal amidst thunderous applause and all I ever get is probably a pat on the back while being ushered back into the stables. So much for glory, so much for recognition. Just to spite them, I would simply just throw a fit and throw the rider off course. Render me insane, I don't care. After all, I'm just the horse.

For me, the highlight of the Olympics, other than the opening ceremony, was the 100m sprint last night. Man, that guy is F.A.S.T! Unbelievable! I only went into the loo for a quick pee (I couldn't hold on any longer) and even before I was done, it was all over. Must be something with them golden boots giving him the edge. Well, I think it's official : Usain Bolt runs faster than I can pee!! I certainly do hope he can equal Carl Lewis' record of winning the 200m as well. Otherwise, there's always the Jamaican bobsled team at the winter olympics..LOL...I miss watching Cool Runnings..

Wanna know where I went on Friday afternoon? Go here..*smile*

Bad day

I'm not sure if it's just me but I seem to be detecting some sort of momi-sonic signals emanating from within the momi-verse. You know, its kind of like animals in the wild, not that we are animals in the wild, the way they send out distress signals or when one of them is down, the others senses it. Yeah, that kind of stuff.

Today, I feel shitty...really shitty...and not exactly witty...and funnily enough, Mott wrote about her continuing bout of yucky feeling. Though, she's at the tail-end of it and is feeling happier, I am down in the dumps. Oh yeah, and I too took it out on Ash. I locked myself in the room, left her crying outside while I tried to get a grip.

Instead of letting it out on the hubby (who will be home any minute now) or anymore on Ash, I shall take it out on those lurkers who found this blog using these keywords search :

mandarin blogspot : OK, ni hao???

various clothed and unclothed men : I don't know whatcha looking for here but sorry to disappoint but there ain't no men on this blog, clothed or otherwise

clothed..unclothed...women : I think its time to set the record straight – all women here are CLOTHED!!

clothed...unclothed girlfriends : Now, this is getting serious. I am married and straight ok. No girl friends of mine are unclothed. All are CLOTHED.

borders the curve : Thanks. I did venture out there.

momsie : that would be correct

shireenloh : that would be me name

There...I'm feeling a little better. Only a little...

Will the real drama queen please stand up..

Records are meant to be broken. Plenty of them have been re-written at the Olympics lately. And one in our household just did.

We came home early from my mom's place yesterday afternoon so hubby could work on the plants. We bought some at the nursery 2 weeks ago and they have been sitting out in our mini backyard since then. I was a little worried about it withering before being able to show them off. You know, have new plants, will show off..get the drift :-)

We came straight home after lunch. Maybe not immediately after lunch. I went and checked out my sister's new computer and then, we came home. After putting away all our stuff, hubby went outside to work on the plants. And guess who followed? Or should I say, guess who insisted on following? There are only 3 of us and certainly not the cow (moi).

I put on her shoes and off she went. Trying to help was her sincere intentions but in reality, help, she wasn't. She took the bucket from the gigantic tub of water and whack the flowers. Petals fell everywhere. She whacked it again and again and again...before I steered her away towards the tub and turn the water tap on. Hoping against hope that she will 'water' the plants instead, like how she has learnt to do.

It seemed clear that my sweet angelic baby had other plans. She threw the bucket away into the tub and ran after her daddy. Watching him closely, I knew something's up. As soon as the spade was down on the floor (oh and he was trying to work as fast as he could too), she swiped it. She took the spade and began whacking the plants. She poked the soil in the pot and whacked the plants. Poke..whack...poke...whack...

She went on and on until she found the soil looking a little delicious. For the life of me, I have no clue where she derived that idea from but she did. In her funny baby way, with spade in left hand, she dug her right fist into the soil and started putting some into her mouth *gasp*!!! I KNOW!!! *gasp again*...Then hubby grabbed her before she could take in more and spoil her dinner (???).

And so it came. The loudest shriek ever, followed by screams that could wake the entire nation. She kicked, screamed, pushed our hands away when we tried taking off her clothes, lied on the bathroom floor, rolled around Bollywood style, kicked and screamed some more. This act of protest lasted the entire, ENTIRE time we tried to give her a shower. It didn't stop even when she was done showering. She kept yelling, screaming to a point where hubby had to close all windows and door lest the neighbours thought we was abusing our child. On the contrar, it was US who were being abused. If I am not deaf by the time I am 40, I have cheated deaf-ness!

She finally calmed down after we gave her hubby's wallet. Sitting there, naked with daddy's wallet, we had our moment of silence. There were sobs in between but at least, she was distracted. But, did it end? Not how we had wanted it to. She protested again when we put her to to bed. TALK. ABOUT. DRAMA. As far as Ash's performance went and if there was an Olympic event for it...a new world record was set and rightly so, deserving recipient of a gold medal!

Ni Hao

In the spirit of the Olympics (and it being held in China), my greetings to you means “How are you?” in Mandarin. Now, this all makes me sound as if I could speak it (Mandarin) right? On the contrary, I don’t. Although, my ancestors do but unfortunately, even my grandma doesn’t speak it. But, all’s not lost as I do speak other Chinese dialects, just not Mandarin So, you could say that I am not a complete “banana”. LOL..

Watched the opening ceremony the other day and as I’ve been expecting : nothing short of spectacular. Kudos to the creative team and Zhang YiMou. Now, in getting into the true spirit of it all, I feel like taking up Mandarin classes. No reason, just so I can feel a little superior and not so much of an idiot for calling myself a Chinese but can’t speak Mandarin.

You see, if I am armed with a minimum of good conversational Mandarin, I can strut confidently around the electrical malls in China (heard the stuffs over there are pretty darn cheap) and bargain for good electronic deals for example. Or at the very least, if I don't get the price that I want, I would still know what they are saying to me, good or bad. Oh well, fancy going back to school at my age..huh! We’ll see…we shall see…

Things that make Momsie go MmmMmm...

Wine and a hot Spanish flamenco dancer!! LOL

The cleaners were here and now, thanks to these wonderful ladies and RM70, all that's left are extremely and squishingly clean floors, bathrooms and kitchen. I am thankful they came because I've been exhausted and too lazy to do anything on Tuesday (my designated work-the-house day). So, 3 cheers for the ladies in green! :-)

Friday is the day and I am in no mood for too many words. With that, I will do away with longish attempts at creative literary (not that I was any close in the first place) and proceed with bullet points for my post:

Olympics;

Top notch opening ceremony;

Federer with Swiss flag and Nadal...well, he'll have to wait for the next one to carry his;

Hot Hot Hot...cuppa (what were you thinking?? *snigger*);

Thinking of popcorn but will shelve the idea cos a roti canai and teh O ais limau sounds more like it;

This is supposed to be short;

This will be short;

Good weekend;

Adios!

Respect

What's with the one-word title anyway? I don't know. Since I started it yesterday, I thought, might as well make it a double..:-)

Where I come from, most households have a maid (some have more!! No, I am not joking). We cannot afford big-luxurious-with-to-die-for garden type houses but a maid?..a piece of cake. This is what I term as “benefits” of living in this country : extra pair of helping hands are extremely affordable. No haggling over the issue of being a SAHM or WAHM or FTWM. Women in Malaysia can have it all. Technically.

But, believe it or not, this post isn't about having to choose or decide which hat to wear if you are a mom. I was over at my aunt's place 2 days ago for the usual impromptu play-date for Ash. And yes, they have a maid. I don't know the maid well (obviously) but from my observation, she seems polite, obedient and very helpful. She comes from Indonesia and has been with my cousin's family for close to a year.

Ash and I were there in the afternoon and the maid was feeding the older of the 2 nieces. She's about 3. At one point, my niece refused to have anymore food but the maid kept feeding her. Not forcing her but just trying her best to coax my niece into having one more bite. I suppose the maid will not stop unless told otherwise, right? I mean, she's basically acting on instructions.

My niece spat out her food, proving that she'd had enough. Not the “spit onto the floor or the bowl or the plate” kind but the “spitting at the maid” kind. I was a little taken aback. How rude is that? The best part was, nobody said anything. My niece wasn't told off or summoned to the naughty corner or made to apologise to the maid. Nothing. She just continued with her spitting until my aunt realised that she REALLY didn't want anymore food and instructed the maid to stop feeding her.

Here is the thing. No matter what, my niece is the child and the maid is the adult. Nevermind her status but the fact remains..child...vs...adult. Furthermore, maids are not slaves. The only reason they are even here is to seek employment and so, deserve to be treated as how you and I would like to be treated. If you do not like your child to be disrespectful to you, there is certainly no room for double standards.

A tough call, I reckon. On one hand, there's this need to reinforce the fact that the family is still ultimately “boss” and at the same time, the need to also discipline the child. In the end, I did not utter a word. I know them well enough to know how they would take it so better to keep me mouth shut. Difficult, ain't it? How would you balance the whole “we are your boss” and “child needs discipline” act?

P.S : There was another reason why I was there - to watch B&B on their brand new 40" HDTV! LOL..A good deal apparently, a best buy item in the store..O_O

P.S.S : The photo above? Nothing to do with this post, whatsoever. I just thought it looked cool with the clear sky and all. Especially, after the horrible rain we had all day today...ALL DAY!!!

Reflections

I like days like these. Makes me happy. Makes me feel that, in the midst of all chaos-ness, there are fleeting moments to cherish.

We were all up at the crack of dawn. Made bacon and eggs for breakfast. Kicked Daddy out the door by 7.30am with Ash crying her eyes out cos she wanted to follow him to work. But all was calm when I put on some clean clothes and promptly took her outside for a walk. Despite repeated warnings of haze and the hazardous environment we are currently experiencing, I thought “What harm can a 30 minute outdoor activity do?”. I was right. It did more good than harm.

Ash spent the entire 30 minutes playing with the pails and the gigantic water storage we have in our front-yard. She has seen me watering the plants and was determined to do it by herself. Not that she was actually getting any water onto the plants but she tried.

I “tricked” her back into the house with a basket of clothes-pegs and it works every time. She sat on the floor, with her clothes soaked, playing for 5 minutes before being ushered to the bathroom for her shower.

I've come to accept that I am now entering a new phase in this whole mommy-hood gig. And I thought I'd never last. For one thing, we've packed away her play-pan. Ash has no further need for it and frankly, so do we (more space for adult stuff). A sign for many more? I should think so cos next, will be replacing her cot with a toddler bed.

It's great to be part of this..part of such a transition in someone's life. I don't think I am the world's greatest mom but right now, I sure feel like the world's most contended mom.

A vodka would be perfect...

At this hour???

Between Friday night and yesterday, I've been pretty much bummed out. Been quite a busy weekend for the 3 of us.

Since I did say that I will tell you about my weekend plan and whether it worked out. It did and, I am glad. Got around to doing things we needed to do. I would say it was a pretty eventful and productive weekend.

In the midst of the running around, we went on a bird hunt...and I'm not talking about the 2 legged kind either. Oh, yes, crap. I am talking about the 2 legged kind but just the kind with real feathers...LOL...

We took lil' Ash to the KL BirdPark located in the city, about 15 to 20 minutes from where we live. The park is covered naturally and it's one of the nature attractions of the Lake Gardens, forming the city's green belt.

In total, we spent walking around for 2 hours. OK, not walking the entire stretch but crawled and stopped for ice-cream and to pee. Incidentally, we were having our ice-cream at the rest area where all the tables and chairs were. I did say it was covered so you would imagine certain harmless chirps roaming around that place right? Yeah, and they drove the kids crazy. Or should I say, the kids drove the birds crazy, chasing and scaring them away...As I was saying, we were seated at one of the tables with trees surrounding us, branches hovering over our heads.

We weren't the only ones but I think, we were the only ones who didn't realise that directly above us sat a huge bird, resting on the branches. The realisation only occurred when we finished our ice-cream and that means, we have been sitting under that humongous thing for at least 15 minutes!!! Imagine what had happened if it pooped on us? Or what if it fell on us? I would've just died! And to think, no one warned us about it. Talk about unfriendly people. I would've told them if it was them sitting under that damn bird.

Now, what's a story without photos eh? Besides, I'm running out of time. So, my dear internets, some photos to keep you company.

Me, Myself and 10 Thousand others...

Remember those scenes from movies where you have a guy (for some reasons, it's usually a guy that has these illusions) sitting in a room, his hair bent out of shape, seemingly lost in his thoughts and un-sure of what he should do with his life. Then, there appears before him, 2 "voices" telling him what he should or ought to be doing. One 'evil' and one 'good' contradicting each other..or rather, himself.

Well, that is exactly how I am feeling at the moment. I am dead tired, hair bent out of shape (just got off the shower) and there are voices around me. The clean clothes are telling me "fold me, keep me, I am everywhere and soon taking over the bed". The dirty dishes are telling me "clean me, wash me, I have uh...no..uh...space...uh...to...uh...move...around here!!!". I have another voice telling me "Oh man, this place stinks!!! Can you get that underwear off my back????". Yep, that was the dirty shirt calling out...

So, do I listen to them or do I just ignore and declare a "NO-CHORE" day/night? Decisions...decisions...*tap tap tap away on the desk*

Oh but wait...at a distance, I hear another voice calling out to me. Very faint but I can hear it..oh..oh, its coming louder and clearer...and..yeah...yup, it's saying - "Come to me. Its late. I am cool and fluffy. You'll love it here"..

Holly cow! I think I've just found the answer and my calling. I am going to listen to my bed!

Twice awarded, a meme and a bump on the head

I'm pretty excited about the weekend and its not because I've had a "few" either.

I will have or will be expecting to have what I term "a good time". So, if things go according to plan, you'd get to hear about it and if things don't, you get to hear about that too..LOL

Alright, lets get down to business, shall we?

THE AWARD

My wonderful blogging buddies have bestowed me with 2 awards but with a twist. They are both identical..hehehe..I puffy heart them nevertheless.

The Longest Breakfast Menu List

Everyone likes to start their day with a comfort food for breakfast. What kind of food do you take? This would be a good way to find out your blogger friend’s favourite food for breakfast.

All you need to do is to put your name down, the country you are in and your favourite breakfast meal. Let’s see how we can have this breakfast ‘menu’ travelled all around cyberspace and learn what each blogger living in different country and what do they eat for breakfast. This meme was created by a little lady with a penchant to spy around little baskets while marketing. Her favourite breakfast of the day is none other than Roti Prata, an indian flat bread. What about you? What is your favourite breakfast meal of the day?

1. Spymama, Singapore - Roti Prata 2. Yyun, Singapore - Wantan Mee 3. A Simple Life, Philippines - Tapsilog (tapa, garlic rice & egg) 4. It Is Nap Time, America, Biscuit with sausage gravy 5.Super Mae,Portugal-cappuccino and french toasts 6. Momsie Tales, eggs, coffee, banana, toast

THE BUMP

That was yesterday afternoon. I was lying in bed with Ash after her nap, goofy-ing around and suddenly...BOPPPP...a loud thud and followed by 2 wails. Why? Cos she hit her forehead on my mouth. Close to an about-to-pop acne (I may need treatments for acne) Naturally I gave out a loud yelp.

Thankfully my lips didn't bleed or suffered any major bruise but hers did. She had a bump and it swell from the impact. I rubbed the bruise and put on some ice. But she kept wanting to play with the ice cube and when it melted, she thought it fell on the floor and cried for it...O_O....Bummer...double bummer...

Took her a while to get over the disappearing ice cube. It wasn't only after I gave her, her lunch did she stop looking for it. So, all's well, ends well...

This is it. That's all from me (for now) folks. Take care and don't let the bed bugs bite...
